I always encourage CFEs, associate and faculty members, students, and others around the world to join their local chapters.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” Well, not always. For example, I’m a member of the ACFE’s Albany Chapter because of something that happened in Las Vegas. In 2004, I was on a plane waiting on the tarmac to depart Vegas’ McCarran International Airport after attending the ACFE’s 15th Annual ACFE Fraud Conference. A passenger leaned over the aisle and asked if I had attended the conference. I guess my ACFE gift bag gave me away. John Brennan, CFE, a senior consultant for BST Inc., was also a conference attendee and, as it turned out, we lived in the same area.

After we talked for a while, he asked, “Why don’t you join our local chapter?” Later, I did just that. I’ve learned so much and gained valuable friends and contacts through the Albany Chapter. I always encourage CFEs, associate and faculty members, students, and others around the world who have an interest in fighting fraud to join their local ACFE chapters.
