Changing of the Guard

By Joseph T. Wells, CFE, CPA

You'll notice something decidedly different about this month's column. It's written by me - your chairman and founder - not Toby Bishop. For those of you who haven't read about it in The Fraud Examiner, Toby left the ACFE at the end of last year to return to private practice. Frankly, I can't blame him.

Running the ACFE is a tough job. I know because, for the first 15 years, I was CEO and the principle spokesman for the Association. During that time, I logged over three million frequent flyer miles meeting members, giving presentations, serving on various committees and spreading the gospel of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. During Toby's last three months alone, he flew over 100,000 miles.

We owe Toby a tremendous debt of gratitude for the many milestones that he accomplished. During his tenure, membership grew by over 10,000; he helped establish the ACFE in many more international locales; he was the impetus behind ACFE Japan; he spearheaded a complete new revision of our antiquated computer system and helped grow the ACFE staff by 50%. We wish him well in his new endeavors.
