In the public interest, whistleblower protection legislation for government employees needs to be strong. In the United States, at least, it is so weak that whistleblowers (or sentinels as we prefer to call them) and all other citizens suffer.

If you, anyone in your family, or anyone you know takes prescription drugs, Dr. David Graham is perhaps someone you should know, thank, and help. Dr. Graham is a drug safety officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). His job involves analyzing data from millions of patients taking different pharmaceuticals. He uses statistical techniques to identify drugs that may be causing unexpected outcomes, including patient deaths.

Dr. Graham said that he found that users of the arthritis drug Vioxx increased their risk of heart attack five-fold at a high dose and two-fold at a low dose. He estimated that 140,000 people in the United States suffered heart attacks and that 60,000 of them died as a result of Vioxx.
