From the President

We can all learn something useful from changes in how fraud is being investigated and prosecuted in the UK. Some of the lessons learned may be copied around the world. Others are a warning for other countries of how the capacity to fight fraud effectively can so easily diminish or be lost.

Our cover star is Robert Wardle, director of the UK's Serious Fraud Office (SFO). The SFO was set up in 1987 with lawyers, police officers, and accountants working together to investigate and bring to prosecution complex and major frauds of public concern.

The SFO has enjoyed good success overall. Its latest annual report shows a conviction rate over the past five years of 70 percent with 135 out of 192 defendants found guilty in 82 trials.
