James David Heater, CFE, 68, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Dec. 9, 2014. Heater was a founding member of the ACFE's Austin chapter and most recently served as the chapter's treasurer.
"David and I worked together for many years on the board of the Austin-area chapter of the ACFE. He was always dependable, and we knew that if he said he'd do something, it would be taken care of," says Shari Daffern, CFE, CIA, a past president of the Austin chapter. "We were usually the first ones to arrive at our board meetings and were able to discuss non-board topics. David enjoyed spending his time volunteering for various non-profit organizations and with his grandkids. He was a great asset to the ACFE and will be missed."
Heater served in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Bergstrom AFB in Austin. He was an internal auditor for the Texas Parks and Wildlife for 35 years and started his own tax and accounting business in 1973. He was a volunteer firefighter and board member for the Manor Volunteer Fire Department. Heater was actively involved in Little League baseball.
"David's passing marks a very sad occasion for our Austin area chapter of the ACFE, as he has been the backbone of the chapter for at least the past 11 years of my chapter involvement," says current ACFE chapter president, Andrew Prough, CFE. "David was a tireless volunteer worker as the chapter treasurer, keeping the books and preparing all of our seminar and lecture materials.
"Beyond his countless hours of involvement in chapter business, David had a warm personality, a wonderful sense of humor and a drive to constantly dive into new projects with a great deal of energy," Prough said. "More than anything, I'll miss his constant encouragement and positive assurance as he pushed our board to grow the chapter."
Heater is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra lla Stewart Heater; his two children; three grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and numerous family members and friends.
